E15 is not approved for boats
E15 contains 15% ethanol. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says it cannot be used in nonroad vehicles such as boats. A newer tow vehicle may accept E15 while the boat behind it does not, which makes pump selection especially important.
Read the label before fueling
Do not choose fuel by octane alone. Confirm the ethanol blend shown on the dispenser and follow the fuel specification in the engine owner’s manual.

- Check portable cans before filling
- Do not assume premium grade means ethanol-free
- If the wrong fuel was added, stop and contact a qualified marine service provider
Storage still matters
Fuel age, water contamination and the condition of hoses, filters and tanks can also cause running problems. Use the manufacturer’s storage procedure and inspect the entire fuel system rather than treating every symptom as an ethanol problem.
